Shirt stripe-boxes quilt top finished!

I finished my shirt-stripe boxes quilt this morning (its about time!). Its been so hot here lately (about 35-40 degree C), I haven't felt much like doing anything energetic. I'm busy thinking about my next quilt... I want to try star blocks and some sunny colours.
I also finished the Botanika throw pillows with black piping for the sofa. I think it looks fresh!

Knitted patchwork

This is a knitted patchwork blanket that I started working on when I was about 15 years old. I work on it from time to time, when I feel like knitting (mostly in winter). This is how I taught myself to knit fair-isle using Kaffe Fassett's wonderful book "Glorious Knitting". I never really knitted any sweaters, except for a vest and a waistcoat from "Glorious Knitting"; I prefer to knit sampler blocks to play with colours and patterns.
I have a whole bag of blocks waiting to be joined, hopefully the blanket will get finished this decade :)

I'm still waiting to get my sewing machine back from the service agents. I haven't had much time for sewing though, I've been away at a national soil science conference for the last week. It went very well, I got an award for the scientific paper I presented, that is God's unmerited favour!

Sewing machine on sick leave and some new stuff

So just as I'm about to finish piecing my shirt-stripe boxes quilt top, my Bernina sewing machine stops working! It is long over-due for a service (I think that it was last serviced about 10 years ago.... oops). So now I'm taking a break from sewing and working on the hand-quilting of the pinwheel quilt. Hopefully it won't take too long to repair.

I've been looking all over for perle crochet cotton no. 8. I found out that they no longer sell the coloured crochet no. 8 cotton in South Africa, they only have white and ecru (boring!). So I managed to find some cotton on Etsy to use for hand-quiliting, very yummy colours!

I also bought two gorgeous jelly rolls (Robert Kaufman - La Maison and Moda - Curio) on sale from Hancocks of Paducah, can't wait to make some traditional looking quilts with this. I just need to find the perfect pattern, I've been Google-ing jelly roll quilts on the web to find inspiration.

I've been planning on making some new sofa cushions with this fun Michael Miller Botanika fabric. I didn't realise that the print is so huge until it arrived, so its best to be used for cushions. I do love birdies! At least I can cut them out in the meantime.

Shirt-stripe boxes quilt progress

I'm almost done with assembling the shirt-stripe boxes quilt (despite wasting most of today at a shopping mall perusing the sales). I've assembled three of the four long panels. Hopefully, I'll get done tomorrow morning with the piecing. Then I can send the quilt off for quilting. I don't fancy quilting it myself, the seams are quite thick.

Tomorrow is my mother's 60th birthday! We're having a big barbecue to celebrate. We are so thankful to the Lord that she is still with us. My mother was diagnosed with aggressive bone marrow cancer (multiple myeloma) in May 2010. We prayed and trusted the Lord for healing, and since February 2011 she is completely cancer free and healed! Praise the Lord!

Kitty toy and piecing shirt-stripe boxes quilt

I finally finished assembling all the shirt-stripe boxes. I've started to lay out the blocks for piecing the quilt.  This is always tricky, especially when working on the floor, drafts and pedestrians tend to muck it up. I will have to sew this together ASAP before it gets scrambled. I live in a small apartment so this is my only option for planning quilt layouts unfortunately.

I also made a few kitty cuddle toys from Amy Butler's Little Stitches for Little Ones book. A few of my work colleagues are expecting, so I thought it would make a cute gift.
